A full sun lover, this plant is best grown in moderately fertile, average to dry, alkaline to neutral, well-drained soils. Thymus serpyllum Elfin, also known as Creeping Thyme, this ornamental herb has purple blooms and tiny evergreen leaves.tall (8 cm) and will spread over time by rooting stems to 12-18 in. I would return this if I had bought it locally. It is almost flat to the ground and doesnt mound higher than 1/2 to 1 inch. I have Thymus Minus growing that I want to match. Although the leaves are aromatic, they are rarely used in cooking. This product is advertised as Thymus Minus, the smallest Elfin Thyme, and this is not it. Rich in nectar, they attract butterflies. The tiny flowers are held very close to the ground. As with other Thymus’s, the Elfin Thyme is a herbaceous plant, which means it will die back to the ground every year.
